Brimstone

Gonepteryx rhamni

Size: wingspan 60-74mm.

Description: female has pale green wings. Male has brighter lemon-yellow wings. Wing shape is the same in both sexes and both have a small orange spot on each wing.

Habitat: light woodland, hedgerows, and gardens. Larvae feed on buckthorn and alder buckthorn. Newly emerged adults will nectar on flowers such as dandelion, primrose and bluebell.

Distribution: widespread and common in England and Wales.
