Polygonia c-album
Size: wingspan 45-64mm.
Description: orange brown with darker markings and an unusual, ragged, wing shape. The underwings give the appearance of a withered leaf. A small white ‘comma’ is visible on the underwing.
Habitat: woodland clearings and gardens and meadows, often in damp places. Larvae feed on nettle, willow, redcurrant, hazel and elm. Newly emerged adults will nectar on willow or blackthorn flowers.
Distribution: England and Wales and increasingly in Scotland.
