Aglais urticae
Size: wingspan 45-55mm (male), 52-62mm (female).
Description: red with black and yellow markings and characteristic blue flecks on wing edges.
Habitat: prefers flowery places and waste ground where its larval food plant stinging nettle grows.
Distribution: throughout the UK.
