In a location that you monitor regularly (at least once a week), record the first time you see a live, active speckled wood outdoors.

Speckled wood is the only species in the UK that can hibernate at two stages, larva or pupa. We are interested in the emerging speckled wood adults that are likely to be first seen in March, April or May.

There may be two or three broods per year depending on the location. Observations made after mid-June are likely to be the offspring of the first brood and should not be recorded.

Available historic data: we have good data from 1980-1999
