Winter buds: reddish-purple, on short stalks, club shaped.
Leaves: alder leaves are simple, rounded in shape and the end is sometimes indented, but never pointed. Their leaves are dark green, shiny and have wavy or slightly toothed edges.
Flowers: male and female catkins.
Fruit: clusters of 3-5 woody cones.
Distribution: commonly grows beside water.
