Winter buds: copper colour, long (1-2 cm) and pointed. Stick out from the twig.
Leaves: simple, pointed oval shape, wavy edges.
Flowers: male flowers cluster at tips of twigs, female flowers paired on short stalks.
Fruit: nuts in spiny cases.
Distribution: found on well drained chalky soils.
